A New Year's blowout was framed as the end of an era, but the Phoenix Hotel in the Tenderloin remains open. Owner Michael Suas, known for Thorough Bread & Pastry and b. Patisserie, purchased the property in August 2024 and retained operation by appointing a new operator. Lease negotiations collapsed with the former operator led by Isabel Manchester, who had been involved since 2011 and opened Chambers Eat + Drink. Founder Chip Conley kept a stake and presided over closing events, citing lease terms, neighborhood changes, and his age as reasons for stepping back. The hotel continues operating under new management.
