GLIDE Memorial Church kicks off annual Turkey Drive with help from Golden State Valkyries
"We are rooted so deeply in this community, and we are supported by the community, and so anything we can do to give back. It means everything to us,"
"People, they were stressing before all of this happened," Dr. Fromer said, "So our goal is to say, 'Hey, you don't have to stress. You can't afford that second or third meal? Come to GLIDE. We got you. We're going to make you feel like there's dignity and respect.'"
"I think that's the most important thing, especially with seniors who are isolated. They don't have any friends, they don't have any family, they get a chance to come here to see their friends and treat their neighbors. That's why Glide is important,"
GLIDE launched its Annual Turkey Drive to feed thousands in San Francisco's Tenderloin during Thanksgiving, with volunteers and community partners serving meals. Members of the Golden State Valkyries and their mascot Violet helped prepare and hand out meals. GLIDE president Dr. Gina Fromer noted SNAP benefits and recent disruptions have intensified food insecurity, leaving many unable to afford additional meals. The nonprofit requests frozen turkey donations at its Turkey Tent on Ellis Street and emphasizes volunteerism, especially to support isolated seniors. The turkey drive runs 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, with year-round volunteer opportunities.
