Entire BART System Goes Down Due to Computer Failure
"One of the reasons why we don't have service is cause we were actually upgrading our computer network last night. It's a massive ongoing project. We don't just work on it one night a week. And so that is part of rebuilding BART, which is part of being a 50-plus-year-old system. It's unfortunate absolutely. We're gonna find out what went wrong."
"systemwide computer equipment failure"
"following network upgrade work."
BART experienced a complete systemwide computer equipment failure Friday morning before trains began running at 5 a.m., halting service across the entire system. BART posted a notice about the failure at 5:30 a.m. and clarified that the failure occurred following network upgrade work. Frustrated commuters arrived at stations only to find no trains available. BART spokesperson Alicia Trost said the outage related to an ongoing, massive computer network upgrade and that the agency will investigate what went wrong. The outage echoed a May 9 computer meltdown that similarly disabled the system. SFMTA warned that buses and trains would likely be crowded as a result.
