Many of these establishments have been linked not only to illegal slot machines but also to firearms, stolen goods, and drugs. Despite arrests and lawsuits aimed at curbing these activities, the presence of such businesses continues to grow. Community leaders express concerns regarding these establishments exploiting vulnerable populations in the neighborhood.
The city's crack down on illegal gambling in the Tenderloin has seen nearly one in five mini-marts and smoke shops searched for hosting slot machines and related gaming devices.
During police raids in the Tenderloin, alongside illegal gaming devices, law enforcement has also seized firearms, stolen merchandise, and in some instances, drugs.
Acting Captain Kevin Knoble stated that some stores in the Tenderloin exploit the at-risk community, making them detrimental to the neighborhood's safety and well-being.
Since June 2024, thirteen arrests have occurred across eight stores linked to illegal gambling operations, with ongoing lawsuits aimed at shutting down these problematic businesses.
