Drug Much Deadlier Than Fentanyl, Carfentanil, Linked to Death In Santa Clara County
Briefly

The Bay Area has reported its first overdose death from carfentanil, a powerful fentanyl analog, confirmed by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner. A 39-year-old man died after consuming counterfeit M30 pills that contained carfentanil, known to be 100 times more potent than fentanyl. This incident raises alarms as carfentanil has never been found in local drug supplies before. Health officials warn against taking counterfeit pills, emphasizing the increased risk of overdose and death. The situation is compounded by the potential presence of other veterinary drugs in the drug supply, highlighting an urgent public health crisis.
"Using drugs alone increases the risk of death. We urge people to avoid the dangers of opioids, especially fake pills that may contain carfentanil or fentanyl," said Dr. Michelle Jorden.
"Fake pills look real, but they can be deadly. People should not take any pill that they did not buy from the pharmacy," Dr. Jordan added.
"What I'm really worried about is because some of the pills that are sold off the street could be potentially laced with carfentanil," Dr. Jordan expressed.
Carfentanil is deadly to humans even in the most minute quantities and has been used to tranquilize elephants.
