Caltrain has been addressing the safety issues at grade crossings, with 71 still remaining on the Peninsula Corridor. The installation of RailSentry, an AI solution using LiDAR and cameras, aims to reduce collision risks by detecting lingering vehicles at crossings. Following successful deployment at a prior location, RailSentry has significantly improved safety, revealing that previously, three vehicles attempted to access the tracks weekly, but since marker improvements, attempts have ceased. The article highlights the importance of using advanced technology to enhance rail safety and urges more stringent measures from the DMV to prevent unsafe driving behaviors.
Caltrain began installing a LiDAR and camera-based artificial intelligence (AI) solution, called RailSentry, at its Churchill Avenue Crossing in Palo Alto as part of its ongoing commitment to safety improvements.
RailSentry's technology revealed that three vehicles per week attempted to turn onto the tracks and ultimately left on their own. Since the installation of the markers... there have been zero attempts by vehicles to turn onto the tracks.
