Casual Carpool services across the Bay Bridge will resume after a hiatus during COVID, starting with one location in Oakland. Organizer Camille Bermudez aims to support returning workers amidst rising commuting costs and the end of the Clean Air Vehicle Decal program. A survey indicated the Lake Park location was preferred, although funding and volunteer constraints limit further expansion. Modern protocols, including communication of safety measures and a potential security guard, are being implemented to ensure a successful revival of the carpool system.
The decades-long tradition of commuting to work across the Bay Bridge with random strangers is officially back after pausing during COVID.
The Clean Air Vehicle Decal program giving solo electric vehicle drivers access to carpool lanes ends in October, causing more single drivers to return to long commutes.
Based on a survey, 71 passengers and 24 drivers out of 501 respondents chose the Lake Park location as the most viable option.
Bermudez has upgraded carpool protocols to modern standards, including communication about masking preferences and payment expectations ahead of time.
