Claude, an albino alligator, died at age 30 after serving 17 years as a resident of the Cal Academy. He brought joy to millions of museum visitors and online fans and acted as an ambassador animal that connected people to nature and inspired curiosity. Claude was celebrated as an unofficial mascot of the Academy and San Francisco, receiving fan mail, gifts, and artwork worldwide. His care team monitored him for a waning appetite, moved him behind-the-scenes for treatment of a suspected infection, and provided veterinary care from the Steinhart Aquarium staff. A full exam and necropsy will be conducted at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to determine the cause.
