"A human driver can be held accountable, can hop out, say sorry, can be tracked down by police if it's a hit-and-run,"
"Here, there is no one to hold accountable."
"darted under our vehicle as it was pulling away."
"our deepest sympathies to the cat's owner and the community who knew and loved him."
Kit Kat, a neighborhood bodega cat, was struck and killed by a Waymo robotaxi on the evening of October 27 in San Francisco's Mission District. Locals created a shrine and placed competing signs criticizing Waymo and noting other deaths caused by human drivers. Jackie Fielder, who represents the Mission District on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, cited Kit Kat while supporting a proposed city resolution asking the state to allow local voters to decide whether driverless cars may operate in their neighborhoods. Waymo said the cat "darted under our vehicle as it was pulling away" and expressed "our deepest sympathies to the cat's owner and the community who knew and loved him."
