Bay to Breakers' 'unique geography' to close several SF streets
Briefly

The Bay to Breakers race, a San Francisco tradition over a century old, takes place on May 18, attracting tens of thousands of participants and spectators. Starting at the Embarcadero and ending at Ocean Beach, the 12K event will lead to significant road closures starting Saturday evening. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency advises travelers to stay on one side of the race route for efficiency. Streets affected include Howard, Steuart, and Spear, among others, with full reopening expected by 2 p.m. on Sunday.
According to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, the event's unique geography cuts the city in half, resulting in only two crossing points for buses and vehicles during the race, at the Embarcadero and Crossover Drive.
The easiest and fastest way to travel during Bay to Breakers is to stay on one side of the race route. For a real need to cross the route, the fastest ways are to use a train or to incorporate walking or rolling across the race route.
