Following a short notice of a city-planned sweep, residents of the Georgia Street homeless encampment witnessed a cleanup. City officials cited ADA accommodation requests as the reason for delaying the sweep, with 90% of residents having received support from advocacy groups. The city conducted preliminary trash removal while consulting residents about belongings they wish to keep, demonstrating a collaborative approach. Assistant to the City Manager, Natalie Peterson, highlighted the effort to ensure a cleaner area while addressing residents' needs before proceeding with full-scale removal.
A handful of individuals have requested ADA accommodations, allowing for more time to move, said Assistant to the City Manager, Natalie Peterson.
Right now we're working on moving excess trash and debris, said Peterson. To try and get (the area) a bit more cleaner while we work on moving forward with a future cleanup.
The Vallejo Homeless Union was able to file ADA claims for 90% of the unhoused living in that area, helping delay the city's clearing process.
City officials are working with individuals to distinguish which items they would prefer to hold on to and which they are comfortable with disposing.
