State Senator Scott Wiener emphasized the critical importance of the Bay Area's BART public transportation system amidst recent shutdowns. He highlighted that such incidents disrupt regional commutes and contribute to chaos, urging the necessity of sustained funding. Wiener forewarned of potential massive service cuts without immediate intervention, asserting that California must increase its support for transit systems. He reinforced BART's vital role not only for riders but also for drivers, as its failure leads to traffic congestion affecting the entire Bay Area.
This is another reminder that the Bay Area does not work without BART, without Muni, without public transportation systems. It just throws the entire region into a little bit of chaos in terms of people's ability to get around.
If we do nothing, we're going to see massive service cuts and today will only be a taste of what's to come. We're working in the state budget this year... to provide some bridge funding for these agencies so that they do not have to cut services.
California does not do as much as other large states to support transit systems, we need to do more. It's critical for the people riding it, but even if you never ride, if you're driving, the last thing you need is enormous traffic congestion.
