The San Francisco Fire Youth Academy, led by Captain Antoine Davis, trains youth aged 14 to 18 in life-saving skills over a 15-week program. This free after-school initiative, rooted in community building, emphasizes teamwork and collaboration through activities like cooking. The program, which began via the San Francisco Black Firefighters Association, addresses the need for diversity in the fire department. Today, 50 percent of the firefighters are from minority backgrounds, with women comprising 17 percent of the workforce. Davis aims to enhance the Academy's presence in local high schools.
"Not only was he able to identify that someone was choking, he jumped into action, and it worked."
"Team work, working together, cooking - we eat together every Saturday as a family when we're together."
Davis is also the president of the San Francisco Black Fire Fighters Association, which was established in 1972 to push back against discriminatory practices within the SFFD."
Hispanic, Filipino, Black, and Asian make up 50 percent of the fire department's employees, and women accounted for 17 percent of the department's workforce in 2022.
