2026 brings new Bay Area bridge tolls, BART fare increases
"The price for entering San Francisco is on the rise again, as several bridge tolls and BART fares are set to immediately increase for the new year on Thursday. BART is adjusting its funding model as commuting behavior changes in the wake of the pandemic, while seven bridges, including the Bay Bridge, are tacking on an extra 50 cents per crossing. It's the start of a plan that incrementally raises bridge tolls over the next five years."
"The additional costs join other Bay Area transit agencies that recently implemented similar fare escalations. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency raised its fares twice this year, first at the start of 2025 and then again in July. It was Muni's first increase since 2019. The cost for adults, ages 19 to 64, went from $2.50 to $2.75 in January before rising to $2.85 in July."
"When BART stations reopen at 8 a.m. on Thursday, riders will notice another 30 cents added to their average fare. The Bay Area's largest transit agency explained how the 6.2% increase helps pay for services and reflects the rise in inflation over the last couple of years. It's the latest in a series of fare increases that started in 2024."
BART and several Bay Area bridges are increasing fares and tolls effective immediately for the new year. Seven bridges, including the Bay Bridge, are adding 50 cents per crossing as part of a five-year toll escalation plan. BART will raise average fares by 30 cents (6.2%) and increase parking fees by about 40 cents at most stations. BART projects $15.6 million in additional revenue while facing a projected $376 million deficit in fiscal 2027 and describes its previous funding model as outdated due to post-pandemic commuting changes. Other agencies including Muni, Caltrain and two ferry operators raised fares in 2025.
