Samsung faces strike from nearly 48,000 union workers - Engadget
Nearly 48,000 Samsung workers in South Korea, representing 38% of the company’s workforce in the country, plan to walk out on May 21 for an 18-day strike. Negotiations between Samsung and its largest labor union continued with a government mediator involved, but no agreement was reached on bonuses. The union wants Samsung to remove the cap on bonuses, set at the equivalent of 50% of annual salaries, and to allocate 15% of annual operating profit to worker bonuses. Samsung, citing record profits driven largely by its memory business, rejected the union’s terms as unacceptable and said accepting them would undermine company management principles. Samsung also obtained a court injunction requiring 7,087 workers to report to work.
