The Roxie Theater in San Francisco has purchased its building for $5 million after a successful fundraising campaign. This acquisition secures the theater's future after 112 years in the Mission District. Despite owning the building, the Roxie is continuing its fundraising efforts, still seeking an additional $700,000 to meet its $7 million goal. These funds are earmarked for updating aging infrastructure, including 1940s projectors, roof repairs, and programming enhancements, particularly for children and visiting artists.
"Purchasing the building has been such a long-held dream of ours, dating back for decades really. And now that we own the building, it gives us a sense of security that we've never had."
The theater's fundraising campaign remains $700,000 shy of its $7 million goal. The remaining funds will go toward investments in the theater's programming and infrastructure, including long-awaited repairs.
One priority is to update the Roxie's 35mm projectors, which are from the early 1940s. Unlike today's standard projectors, which use light bulbs, the 35mm projectors use carbon rods, which have to be custom manufactured.
The Roxie also plans to reboot its daytime programming for kids and to invite more visiting artists, like Rachel Maddow and body horror auteur David Cronenberg.
