'Thank you leader': Calif. mayor charged with working for Chinese government
"Minutes later, prosecutors alleged, Wang reposted the material to her own website and sent the official a link. Prosecutors said Wang worked alongside Yaoning "Mike" Sun, a Chino Hills political operative who was sentenced earlier this year to four years in federal prison in a related foreign-agent case."
Eileen Wang, former mayor of Arcadia, resigned after federal prosecutors accused her of secretly advancing the interests of the People’s Republic of China. She was charged in federal court with acting as an illegal agent at the direction and control of China between late 2020 and 2022. Prosecutors said she is expected to plead guilty soon. Arcadia updated its website to state her resignation from the mayor’s office and City Council seat effective May 11, with the City Council to select a new mayor and mayor pro tem and address representation for District 3 until the 2026 election cycle. Prosecutors alleged Wang worked with Yaoning “Mike” Sun, previously sentenced in a related case, and operated a website called U.S. News Center that presented itself as a local Chinese-language news outlet while distributing pro-Beijing messaging provided by Chinese officials.
