SF Marina Safeway popular with singles might be getting a makeover
"A proposal is on the table that would bring more affordable housing and a brand new Safeway grocery store to San Francisco's Marina neighborhood. Align Real Estate has filed plans to develop a unique 25-story apartment complex at the site where a well-known and iconic Safeway currently stands. The developer says it would include a new Safeway, along with nearly 800 homes along Marina Boulevard next to Fort Mason."
"The Family Zoning Plan will help the next generation of San Franciscans afford to raise their kids here, and we're going to do that while protecting what makes our neighborhoods so special. A developer trying to sneak in a project before our plan takes effect is a complete violation of the spirit of that work. Our administration will stand up firmly to developers that game the system, and we will pull every lever we can to make this a project that works for this neighborhood and our city."
Align Real Estate filed plans to build a 25-story apartment complex at the site of the Marina Safeway, proposing a new Safeway grocery store alongside nearly 800 housing units. The project would include 86 units designated as affordable housing and sit along Marina Boulevard next to Fort Mason. The Marina Safeway has been a local social spot since the 1970s. The same developer proposed a similar Bernal Heights Safeway redevelopment last month. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie formally opposes the Marina proposal and pledged to use city authority to modify or block projects that bypass the Family Zoning Plan.
