""Increased turnout is the way we beat it," Engardio said to supporters recently."
""I thought they would have much more, at least over 10,000.""
""We are not into recalls," one resident told Engardio. "They are a waste of time.""
Joel Engardio faces a recall after backing Prop. K to close the Great Highway, which won citywide but lost heavily in his district. Engardio is canvassing in the Sunset five hours a day, seven days a week to increase turnout and avoid a Sept. 16 special election. District 4 contains about 50,000 voters; over 36,800 voted on Prop. K last November, and 23,480 (64%) voted against it. More than 10,000 residents signed the recall petition, and over 10,000 ballots (about 20% of district voters) have been returned. The campaign identified 7,760 supporters and 4,615 opponents since June 1.
