"It feels like for so long, we were not really being acknowledged for the work we do or being taken for granted, so to hear so many people from chief of police to the mayor to the supervisors acknowledging what a difference we've made in this city,"
San Francisco city leaders, community members, and Urban Alchemy staff assembled on City Hall steps to honor Joey Alexander, an Urban Alchemy ambassador fatally shot outside the public library. Mayor Daniel Lurie, Interim SFPD Chief Paul Yep, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, and supervisors spoke and thanked outreach workers for their street-level efforts. Community advocates Cedric Akbar and Robert Sky Carter emphasized Alexander's role in uniting the neighborhood and the emotional impact of the loss. Urban Alchemy CEO Dr. Lena Miller said public recognition validated the organization's work and comforted staff. The mayor noted increased police presence in the area following the killing.
