During Markwayne Mullin's confirmation hearing for Homeland Security secretary, Senator Rand Paul, who chairs the committee, opened by addressing Mullin's earlier remarks calling him a 'freaking snake' and implying his physical assault by a neighbor was deserved. Paul recounted his injuries from the attack, including six broken ribs and a damaged lung, and challenged Mullin to justify these comments face-to-face. Mullin responded by denying he called Paul a liar and doubled down on his criticism, stating Paul fights Republicans more than working with them. Mullin suggested their personal conflict would not impede his ability to lead the department.
