Philippines accuses China of aggressive' tactics in South China Sea
Briefly

Tensions in the South China Sea escalated when the Philippine fisheries bureau claimed that the Chinese coastguard attacked its vessel, the BRP Datu Sanday, during a research operation. The incident involved the use of water cannons and a sideswipe maneuver by the Chinese vessel. This confrontation marked a notable increase in aggression, as it was the first instance of water cannon deployment against Philippine ships in the contested area. While the Philippines succeeded in completing their marine research, the altercation underscores the ongoing territorial disputes in the region and China's assertive claims over the waters despite international condemnation.
At approximately 0913H, CCG vessel 21559 water cannoned and sideswiped the BRP Datu Sanday (MMOV 3002) twice, putting at risk lives of its civilian personnel.
It was the first time water cannon were used against Philippine vessels near the disputed Sandy Cay reef, the bureau added.
The Chinese coastguard said in a statement that the Philippine vessel dangerously approached its ship, resulting in the collision.
Beijing claims it has sovereignty rights over almost the entire South China Sea, despite an international ruling that the assertion has no legal basis.
