Philippine lawmakers move to impeach VP Sara Duterte
"After the Monday vote, Duterte's defence counsel said the burden of proof now rests with her accusers. "We are fully prepared to defend the Vice President before the Senate sitting as an Impeachment Court," the statement said. An impeachment attempt against Sara Duterte was struck down"
The Philippine lower house voted to advance impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. The constitution requires the case to move to a Senate trial, where a guilty verdict could remove her from office and bar her from holding elected positions for life. The impeachment articles cite misappropriation of public funds, unexplained assets, and bribery of public officials. They also include an alleged death threat against former ally President Ferdinand Marcos. Lawmakers approved sending evidence to the Senate by a large margin, with the house dominated by Marcos’s allies. Duterte denies the threat was real, saying her remarks were misinterpreted and made out of concern for her safety, while her defense says the burden of proof rests with accusers.
