Pakistan has announced a substantial increase in its defense spending by nearly 20%, totaling approximately $9 billion, to address heightened military tensions with India. This decision comes after a recent military engagement that significantly raised security concerns in the region. The government faces the challenge of reducing subsidies and other expenditures to accommodate the budget hike. Additionally, Pakistan continues to strengthen its military capabilities, with offers of advanced equipment from its ally China, even as its defense budget remains far below India's imposing $80 billion figure.
Pakistani Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb stated that the defense budget will rise by almost 20 percent to $9 billion, which requires slashing other government spending.
Pakistan's parliament is expected to approve the defense budget, seen as a formality amid concerns regarding their air defenses after India's recent strike operations.
Political scientist Farrukh Saleem pointed out the stark disparity in defense economics between India and Pakistan, stating 'there is a staggering asymmetry in defence economics'.
Despite these disparities, Saleem concluded that 'efficiency trumped extravagance' when discussing the outcomes of the recent aerial skirmishes, highlighting Pakistan's perceived victory.
