Meet the S.F. school board candidates: Do you support the 2022 recall?
In 2022, San Francisco school board controversies over renaming and pandemic-era closures led angry voters to recall three board members. The recall passed with an average of over 72% support, with more than 70% of voters choosing recall, though only 179,981 registered voters returned ballots for about 36% turnout. Four years later, three candidates are competing for a school board seat, including one who previously advocated against the recall. Virginia Cheung declined to say how she would have voted, while acknowledging the frustration behind the recall and calling it costly and divisive. Phil Kim supported the ouster, criticizing the prior board for focusing on wrong priorities and distractions. Brandee Marckmann opposed the recall, arguing it was fiscally irresponsible, cost $8 million, and did not resolve district problems.
"In Marckmann's response to Mission Local's question, Marckmann took a common stance amongst progressive politicians: that the recall was fiscally irresponsible, costing taxpayers $8 million. The recall, Marckmann wrote, "did not solve the district's many problems" and should be reserved for "egregious circumstances.""
