The Tech Challenge, an engineering event in Santa Clara County, drew over 600 student teams to the San Jose McEnery Convention Center to showcase their inventions. Founded by engineer Greg Brown, the event has grown from its humble beginnings, promoting creative problem-solving since its inception in 1988. This yearâs challenge, 'Gravitate to Navigate,' encouraged participants to create gravity-powered devices that could navigate multiple tracks. Awards were given not only for technical achievement but also for design creativity, teamwork, and safety measures, making the competition not just about winning, but also about learning and collaboration.
"It sounds pretty easy, but it wasn't that easy. That became the first criterion of the Tech Challenge: Make it sound deceptively simple," Brown said.
Nearly 40 years later, the Tech Challenge has grown exponentially but is still deceptively simple: This year's challenge, 'Gravitate to Navigate,' tasked teams..."
Awards are also presented for interesting designs, journaling their progress, taking appropriate safety measures and finding a role for all team members.
Brown was a student at Stanford in the prehistoric days of the Tech and thought a fun way to promote the learning center's potential was for young students...
