Southern California sprinters scorch CIF state prelims, setting up record-chasing finals
Rosary Academy’s girls 4x100 relay qualified first in 45.13 seconds, nearly a full second faster than Canyon Country Canyon at 46.07, at Buchanan High School. The Royals set a state record of 44.23 at the Arcadia Invitational on April 11, then were beaten by Calabasas at the Mt. SAC Relays, but Calabasas later dropped the baton in Southern Section finals and failed to advance. Maliyah Collins anchored with a large lead, while Justine Wilson said the goal was making finals and running faster for a PR and state record. In the girls 100, Calabasas still had qualifiers Malia Rainey (11.54), Marley Scoggins (11.63), and Olivia Kirk (11.63). Servite’s boys 4x100 relay won the first heat in 40.29, two hundredths off last year’s state finals winning time, with Benjamin Harris and twin brothers Jorden and Jace Wells leading the group.
"Rosary set a state record (44.23) at the Arcadia Invitational on April 11, but lost to the Coyotes one week later at the Mt. SAC Relays. However, the anticipated state finals clash was not to be as Calabasas dropped the baton in the Southern Section finals and failed to advance."
