Sonoma State University gets $45 million lifeline, potentially saving athletic department
Briefly

Sonoma State University has been struggling financially, leading to significant cuts, including its entire athletic department. Elected officials and California State University leadership announced a $45 million investment aimed at revitalizing the university and potentially reinstating some sports programs. Men's Soccer coach Marcus Ziemer expressed hope for student engagement as a result of this funding, while student-athlete Jack Chapman voiced concern about the implications of future financial stability and recruitment challenges. The university emphasized that the funds will support innovative programs in healthcare, data science, and more, addressing regional workforce needs.
"We need things to keep the students engaged and connected to the university, which leads to more involvement in the school spirit, in all the clubs," SSU Men's Soccer coach Marcus Ziemer said.
"Now it'll get other athletes thinking, 'Is this a guarantee? Is something like this going to happen again? Is this the right decision for me?'" Chapman said.
