SFUSD 'central office' layoffs would actually eliminate on-site school workers
Briefly

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is cutting 205 central office positions to mitigate a $113 million budget deficit. This plan reduces central office expenditures from 25% to 16% of the total budget. However, many eliminated positions directly impact schools, including critical staff such as counselors and special education teachers. John O'Connell High School, significantly affected by these cuts, stands to lose essential roles including its career technical education coordinator, which is vital for student job placements and career readiness programs. SFUSD's promises to protect teaching staff do not shield vulnerable schools like O'Connell from severe consequences.
"When counselors or nurses are cut, it makes a big difference since staff often play dual roles," said O'Connell special education teacher Sekani Spero during an April protest by students and teachers.
One critical loss is O'Connell's sole 'career technical education' coordinator - a 'central office' role teachers say is vital to O'Connell's flagship career readiness program.
Teachers and O'Connell's principal, Amy Abero, say that eliminating this position means losing someone who coordinates opportunities with employers and helps students get jobs during the school year.
Under the SFUSD's Central Office Reduction Plan, the district would reduce central office expenditures from 25 percent to 16 percent of the total budget.
