SFUSD avoids teacher layoffs but other positions are in jeopardy as district tackles $114M deficit
Briefly

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is preparing to finalize layoffs due to a significant $114 million budget deficit. Over 280 educators on temporary contracts have already lost their positions, with more cuts anticipated. Superintendent Maria Su warns that while progress has been made, the district may still need to eliminate or scale back services. Recent developments, such as California lifting a hiring freeze on teachers, offer a glimmer of hope. However, concerns remain regarding potential impacts on education quality and resources for students as the district navigates these challenges.
We have over 280 educators on temporary contracts who have been released. Don't have a job right now. We have 34 counselors who have been rehired. There are 129 paraeducators that haven't been hired.
I want to be very honest with everyone. While we are making progress, we are not out of the woods yet. We will have to reduce, pause and in some cases eliminate entire programs and services throughout the district.
