"The community is very strong. People are very proud of their schools. You can tell it's a magnet, it's a center for the community, for all the kids, for all the parents. And it's like, why disrupt that?"
"I didn't know until a couple of days ago. Somebody left a flyer on my door saying you're going to get re-zoned, the schools will shut down. I mean the communication was horrible."
San Jose Unified School District's advisory committee approved a plan to close five elementary schools as the district faces a significant budget crisis. The decision followed an initial proposal to close up to nine schools, which was reduced after community pushback. The district attributes the closures to a 20% decline in enrollment since before the pandemic. Parents and community members expressed strong opposition, citing concerns about school disruption and inadequate communication about the process. Many residents feel the decision-making has lacked transparency and moved too quickly. The school board is scheduled to meet Thursday to make a final determination on the closures.
