Environmental researchers are pushing Governor Newsom's administration to finance soil testing for homes destroyed by the Eaton and Palisades wildfires. A letter from university professors cited the lack of federal action on soil sampling, posing risks to public health and hindering community recovery. They emphasize that comprehensive testing is crucial following the cleanup of toxic ash and topsoil. The absence of a recommended testing policy can jeopardize both safety and economic recovery for residents affected by these wildfires.
At present, no parcel-specific soil testing is required or recommended by the State for residential properties impacted by the Eaton Fire and Palisades Fire.
The decision not to conduct soil testing the way it has been in the past - without any advanced warning - has really thrown personal safety and the ability of the community to rapidly recover up in the air.
