Pleasanton City Council approved $12 million in budget cuts to address a significant deficit impacting vital services such as library hours and park maintenance jobs. Despite the citizens' opposition to closing the aquatic center and fire station, cuts were made to fill a projected annual deficit of $13 million, which may escalate to $22 million in a recession. Mayor Jack Balch, initially optimistic, acknowledged the necessity of these cuts, advocating for prudent budgeting in light of economic concerns as a local business owner and accountant.
If we want to avoid all of it, I don't think that's possible. As a business leader, I am more concerned that a recession may occur than I had been earlier in the year. And I think it's prudent to be considering that possibility in our budgeting process.
Pleasanton residents should soon expect to feel the effects of the city's multi-million dollar cuts recently solidified by the City Council in the face of a severe budget deficit.
