The Oakland Education Association (OEA) has called off a planned strike for May 1, citing the achievement of a tentative agreement with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). This decision follows allegations from OEA that the district was withholding crucial financial information necessary for negotiations amidst recent budget cuts. OEA President Kampala Taiz-Rancifer emphasized the need for OUSD to collaborate with the union as a partner in decision-making processes. Key negotiation issues included the number of long-term substitutes and the duration of teacher contracts for certain schools.
Moving forward, we urge the District to include the Oakland Education Association as a true partner in shaping decisions that impact our schools, students, and their families.
Some of the sticking points seemed to be over how many long-term substitutes OUSD would hire for the 2025-2026 school year, and whether to give 10- versus 11-month teaching contracts.
