A tragic accident occurred in Ohio when a Norfolk Southern train struck a family crossing the Mile Newton Bridge, leading to the deaths of a mother and daughter. The incident happened around 7:30 p.m., as the family, visiting from Fort Wayne, Indiana for a fishing trip, was knocked into the Sandusky River. A toddler was injured and rushed to a hospital, while emergency responders searched for a missing 5-year-old boy. Local officials expressed their condolences and the railroad company conveyed its sorrow while assisting in the ongoing investigation.
"This is a very, very unfortunate tragedy that has hit our community," Sanchez said.
"What we think started off as a fishing trip for a family from Fort Wayne, Indiana ended in tragedy," Sanchez told reporters.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts are with those affected, their loved ones, and the community during this difficult time," Norfolk Southern stated.
Rescue divers are still searching for the missing 5-year-old, and more teams are on their way to aid in the search.
