"Happily today, 52 years later, I get to say to the world that our father is exonerated. Their dad was slapped with a powerful social mark of disgrace until his dying day in 2006. The murder had remained unsolved for 50 years and was officially reopened in 2024 after the DNA of a relative of Generazio's helped establish the link."
"Thomas Generazio, who had lived nearby and died at age 57, was positively ID'd as the killer through familial DNA, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder announced Wednesday. Although officials had a near perfect police sketch of the criminal decades ago, DNA technology had yet to be established at the time of the murder."
Barbara Waldman, 31, was sexually assaulted and shot in her Oceanside home on February 1, 1974, discovered by her young son. Her husband Gerald Waldman, a dentist, faced suspicion and social ostracism for over 50 years despite never being charged. Thomas Generazio, a sanitation worker who died in 2004, was identified as the perpetrator through familial DNA analysis in 2024. Although police had a detailed sketch and fingerprint evidence at the time, DNA technology did not exist to make the connection. Generazio had prior arrests for assault and theft. The victim's family expressed relief at finally clearing their father's name and obtaining closure after five decades.
