Family pleads for help in mysterious death of UCSB student Liz Hamel
Briefly

Liz Hamel, an 18-year-old UC Santa Barbara freshman, died following a fall from a dorm breezeway in February. Her family is demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding her death, particularly regarding her last interaction with a man seen leaving a noodle bar with her shortly before the incident. While the UC police conducted an initial investigation and interviewed the last person with Hamel, details about the case—such as the cause of death—remain withheld from the public. The family continues to urge for clarity amid the silence from authorities.
UC police in Santa Barbara previously told SFGATE that the man last seen with Hamel, who is not a UCSB student, was identified and interviewed; the department has not shared any new information since May 15.
The Santa Barbara County coroner's office declined to share information on Hamel's cause or manner of death. The Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office told SFGATE that no criminal charges have been sent their way for review.
Maho told SFGATE on Tuesday that the man in the photograph was identified as a resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, a city in LA County, around 130 miles south of Santa Barbara.
Hamel's family is appealing to the public again for help understanding what happened to their only daughter who died mysteriously in February on the UCSB campus.
