Crews battle fire burning in Pala, evacuations underway in northern San Diego County
Briefly

A brush fire, named the Henderson fire, started in Pala, California, on Friday evening, consuming 183 acres within two hours and prompting immediate evacuation orders for nearby communities, particularly impacting members of the Pala Band of Mission Indians. As of 8:45 p.m., the fire was reported as only 5% contained, primarily affecting the eastern flank. Weather forecasts indicated high temperatures and winds could hinder firefighting efforts. A temporary shelter was established at Pala Casino, with road closures set for several local routes to ensure public safety.
The blaze, dubbed the Henderson fire, broke out near Henderson Road and Pala Mission Road about 5:45 p.m. and charred 183 acres in two hours.
"It's burning in a grass and brush area that starts going into rolling hills and very mountainous terrain," Cal Fire Capt. Thomas Shoots explained, highlighting the challenges of firefighting in such terrains.
