Recent lawsuits against San Diego County reveal disturbing allegations of sexual abuse against children placed in protective custody. Many of these children, fleeing domestic violence and parental drug addiction, ended up in environments rife with exploitation and abuse by the very social workers tasked with their safety. Claims include intentional drugging to facilitate abuse, as well as physical and verbal mistreatment at the Polinsky Children's Center. Legal representation highlights systemic negligence within the county that led to decades of silence surrounding these atrocities, particularly since the passage of the California Child Victims Act in 2019, allowing survivors to pursue justice.
Based on our investigation, the County of San Diego was apparently one of the largest employers of child molesters in the state of California, said attorney Blake Woodhall.
Many children reported to the staff and administration that they were being sexually abused while they were at Polinsky, he said.
Others pleaded for help but were completely ignored or dismissed.
In case after case, boys and girls were sexually abused by people charged with protecting them, according to a spate of new lawsuits.
