The San Francisco Civic Symphony was created in 1931 by Mrs. Sigmund Stern with support from Dr. Josephine Randall, first director of the San Francisco Recreation Department. The symphony is the oldest community orchestra on the West Coast. Since 2002, the ensemble has operated as an all-volunteer orchestra managed by its members and volunteer supporters. The 2025–2026 season presents free Sunday concerts at Herbst Theatre under Music Director and Conductor Paul Schrage. Programs run from November 2, 2025 through June 7, 2026 and include works by Strauss, Ravel, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Copland, Holst, and others. Concerts accept donations with suggested amounts.
