San Francisco Civic Symphony was created in 1931 by Mrs. Sigmund Stern with support from Dr. Josephine Randall and is the oldest community orchestra on the West Coast. Since 2002 the ensemble has been an all-volunteer orchestra managed by members and volunteer supporters. Paul Schrage serves as Music Director and Conductor. The 2025–2026 season offers free Sunday afternoon concerts at Herbst Theatre with suggested donations. Program highlights include Strauss's Don Juan and Ravel's Sheherazade (Nov. 2, 2025); Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 6 (Jan. 18, 2026); an American program featuring Gershwin, Price, Copland, and Gottschalk (Mar. 22, 2026); and Holst's The Planets (June 7).
