San Francisco-born band with over 100,000 monthly listeners leaves Spotify
Briefly

Deerhoof, the influential art rock band, is withdrawing their music from Spotify in protest against CEO Daniel Ek's chairmanship in a defense tech company, Helsing. The band expressed their discomfort with their music being associated with warfare technology and emphasized that this decision was made easily, as they earn more from touring than streaming. They described Spotify as a "data-mining scam" and indicated that while leaving the platform might take time, they felt it necessary to stand for their principles as artists.
"We don't want our music killing people. We don't want our success being tied to AI battle tech," the band wrote in their statement.
"Pretty easy decision for us," Deerhoof stated, given they make more money from touring than streaming royalties.
The band criticized Spotify as a "data-mining scam masquerading as a 'music company'" and noted, "Spotify is flushing itself down the toilet."
In their farewell from Spotify, Deerhoof reflected on their roots and the importance of authenticity tied to their San Francisco heritage.
