Review: Local legend delivers very different night of music and memories
"his one-man show on Monday night (Sept. 8) at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco by remembering how his father had once told him that he was a mistake but a good mistake. He'd later learn that his parents originally planned to terminate the unplanned pregnancy and his father even sent his mother off to an abortion clinic with $300 to do just that. Yet, while waiting at the clinic, his mother decided to go use the money to buy groceries at Safeway instead."
"Those expecting a regular greatest hits retrospective concert certainly didn't get it. Instead, they received a guided journey, via dialogue and song, through the years, highlighting the key moments in Saadiq's life that have combined to bring him where he is today. Think Springsteen on Broadway, only with way funkier basslines. It was a special night for longtime fans, with Saadiq taking attendees behind the music, relaying plenty of fun stories and showcasing a tremendous amount of personality."
Raphael Saadiq opened his Davies Symphony Hall one-man show by recounting his near-abortion and birth after his mother used abortion money to buy groceries, leading to his Oakland birth on May 14, 1966. The 59-year-old singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer referenced his start in Tony! Toni! Tone! and used two hours on stage to guide fans through pivotal life and career moments via dialogue and song. The performance emphasized storytelling over a standard hits set, mixing bass, guitars and significant piano playing that Saadiq returned to during the pandemic. The vibe remained intimate and personal throughout.
