Thousands gathered under a bright blue sky at Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco for a memorial called Homecoming honoring Bob Weir. The event brought together fans, friends, family members and dignitaries to celebrate his legacy as a musician who built community and sought to improve the world. Weir died Jan. 10 of lung issues after battling cancer at age 78. He co-founded the Grateful Dead in 1965 in Palo Alto. The band cultivated the devoted Deadhead fanbase through constant touring and nightly varied setlists so no two shows were the same. Attendees sang "Ripple" while musicians including John Mayer and Oteil Burbridge participated.
