Top world pizza rankings only include 1 Bay Area pizzeria
Briefly

Despite significant acclaim, the Bay Area's pizza scene struggles to gain global recognition. Recently, Pizzeria da Laura, led by chef Laura Meyer, secured the 96th spot on the Best Pizza awards list. Meyer, acclaimed for being the first woman to win the best pan pizza category at the World Pizza Championship, represents a shift in the male-dominated pizza landscape. The Best Pizza Awards, founded in 2023, focus on transparency and quality, boasting a panel of 500 experts. This achievement highlights the potential for growth in the Bay Area pizza industry despite its rich local reputation.
Meyer is one of many women making waves in the pizza world, which is largely dominated by men, and her restaurant reflects that. "It's something that's very personal to me," she told SFGATE in 2023. "This is my life. This is my career. This is pretty much me in pizzeria form. To name it after myself was important because I'm very proud of it."
This is Meyer's first placing at the Best Pizza Awards, a globally recognized ranking compiled by an independent voting panel of over 500 pizza experts that "ensures transparency and excellence, eliminating commercial influence and giving chefs the final say."
Despite earning tons of local and national acclaim, prominent global tastemakers seem to think the Bay Area's pizza scene still has some growing up to do. Only one area restaurant managed to squeeze into the newest ranking of the top 100 pizzerias in the world.
Founded in 2023, the awards (Best Pizza Awards) are dedicated to 'preserving the integrity of pizza accreditation' and are modeled after the Best Chef Awards, a separate global ranking that has been in place since 2015.
