The LEAST healthy snacks from Mini Cheddars to lentil chips
A Which? investigation assessed more than 60 popular savoury snacks, including products marketed as healthier alternatives such as lentil and quinoa chips. More than half failed the government’s official health scoring system, raising concerns that shoppers may be misled by “health halo” branding. Jacob’s Mini Cheddars Original scored 20 out of 100 on the NPM scale, with high saturated fat, high salt, and low fibre, despite relatively high protein. Kettle Chips lightly salted performed better, with much lower saturated fat. Some “health halo” products still failed the NPM, with researchers finding that salt was often used to improve taste, undermining nutritional value. Proper Chips barbecue lentil chips scored 36 out of 100, with high salt, very low fibre, and added sugar.
"Despite the brand's claim on its website that its snacks are 'not just better for you, but better than anything,' they have high salt levels (2.55g per 100g), which gives it a large number of 'negative' points in the NPM. Although lentil flour makes up just over a quarter of this product, contributing to its decent protein levels, the fibre is extremely low (0.7g - the lowest of the dataset) so the positive contribution of the protein isn't enough to offset the high salt and 4.5g of sugar per 100g."
