San Francisco hosts a diverse range of Mediterranean restaurants reflecting culinary traditions from various countries around the Mediterranean Sea. Each restaurant presents unique dishes and experiences, from the mezze sampler at Beit Rima, a casual Palestinian and Jordanian spot, to the large mazze platters at Komaaj Mazze Wine Bar, showcasing Northern Iranian cuisine. Every location brings its own distinctive flavors and cultural elements, ensuring a rich Mediterranean dining experience in the city.
The mezze sampler from Beit Rima should be commemorated as a statue in the middle of Duboce Park-it's a neighborhood icon, and only one of the fantastic dishes coming out of this casual Palestinian and Jordanian restaurant. Along with the rotund scoops of muhammara, hummus, and lebna, the Duboce Triangle restaurant also does crispy whole fried branzino, comfort-on-a-plate chicken skewers, and puffy hand-kneaded bread dusted in za'atar. It gets loud in the dining room, but raising your voice to talk about the current retrograde in between bites of pita is all part of the fun.
Komaaj Mazze Wine Bar is a Northern Iranian spot in Bernal Heights that feels like a rug-filled living room. There's tons of seating in the dining area and at the bar where you can admire the pots and ceramics hanging on the wall while sipping on an icy sauvignon blanc. Their mazze platters are large enough to land a helicopter on, loaded with dips that go heavy on fresh herbs and pomegranate, and always nail the sour-sweet-salty trifecta. For something on the more filling side, order the chicken stew-the meat falls off the bone with a single poke of a fork.
