The battle to bring back one of SF's most highly attended night markets
Briefly

San Francisco's Sunset Night Market, which attracted over 20,000 attendees last year, is facing delays in its return, likely until late 2025 or early 2026. Organizers from the Wah Mei School and Sunset Mercantile cite issues with reimbursement from the city, which was delayed by eight months, straining small businesses involved. Additionally, the event's overwhelming success raised concerns about its scale relative to the local area, prompting organizers to seek more inclusive programming. Future events may be smaller and scheduled around holidays to better balance community needs.
"We did not receive the grant funding until May 2025 which was 8 months later and put a big strain on the small organizations and small businesses of our Sunset Night Market Collaborative," Angie Petitt, founder and CEO of the Sunset Mercantile, told SFGATE in an email.
Organizers told SFGATE that streets were shut down as early as 3 p.m. in order for the estimated 150 vendors to start setting up.
They needed time to develop more inclusive programming that "uplifts and supports all of the brick and mortars" in the corridor, Petitt said.
