For three consecutive weekends, Mission Street has remained clear by day, but as evening approaches, unpermitted vendors and drug users congregate on the east side. The vendors offer items like keychains and tennis shoes while drug use occurs publicly. During the day, the police and outreach workers maintain cleanliness on the street. Although the presence of a mobile unit has diminished, it is expected to return soon. Nearby Caledonia and Julian avenues also see gatherings, which are anticipated to move back to Mission Street after police depart.
For the third weekend in a row, both sides of Mission Street have been clear during the day, but come 6 p.m. or so, unpermitted vendors and drug users gather on the east side of Mission Street.
On the east side of Mission Street, the evening hours brought unpermitted vending of everything from keychains to tennis shoes, alongside open-air drug use.
Until the evening hours, the San Francisco Police Department, the Department of Public Works and outreach workers kept the BART plazas clear and Mission Street looking like any commercial corridor.
Caledonia Street and Julian Avenue had more people congregating near 15th Street, and they will return to Mission Street once the police leave.
