""I might not know all their names, but if you tell me their favorite dish, I'll know exactly who they are,""
""We are like a little United Nations," he said. "People of all ethnicities come here for the food, yet essentially we are a place for the working-class people.""
""薄利多销,""
The San Francisco Public Press and the Ingleside Light are partnering on a series about Chinese American culture and businesses focused on the Ingleside neighborhood. Wang Wah, a family-owned restaurant on Ocean Avenue, has served customers for 40 years. Juan Zhou Xu remembers customers by their favorite dishes despite limited English, and her husband, Bing Xu, prepares dishes adjusted to diverse tastes. The restaurant offers Chinese American classics and attracts a working-class, multiethnic clientele. Wang Wah opened in 1985 as Golden China and was the only Chinese restaurant on a corridor of largely African American-owned businesses; neighborhood demographics and businesses have shifted over decades. The couple credits the principle "薄利多销"—small profits and many sales—for long-term survival.
